Portfolio Exercise 6 Do X-Rated Films Provoke Sexual Violence? The feminist pornography debate began in 1980’s, and since then there has been a division of views in three groups. There are anti-pornography feminists, often referred to as “radical feminists”; anti- censorship feminists who are critical of pornography, but who are against legal approaches to restrict pornography; and pro-pornography feminists who are supportive of pornography as a mean of liberating women’s sexuality. The radical feminists argue that violence against women is a patriarchal method to control them. They criticized misogynistic imagery and violence against women, forming a group in US, called Women Against Pornography (WAP). WAP educated and protested against pornography in the 70’s and 80’s. This lead to radical feminist publications, such as Take back the night: Women on pornography (Lederer 1980) and Pornography: Men possessing women (Dworkin, 1981), which argued pornography disseminated propaganda for violence and hate against women.
