Midterm Study Guide CMNS 291 Research Methods Exam will be about 50 multiple choice or true/false, and will come from readings and class lectures. This exam will cover chapters 1-4 of Neuman’s Understanding Research. o What is Research (that is, how does it compare with other ways of knowing?) o What is empirical evidence? o Four purposes of social research (see chart p. 17) o The Wheel of Science (see also fig. 2.8 p. 45) o Idiographic vs. nomothetic explanations (from lecture notes) o Inductive vs. deductive reasoning o Sharpening and Leveling (lecture) – what the terms mean and what they means for us as critical thinking media consumers. o Basic vs. applied research (difference) o Variables – what are they, where do they fit in social science Independent vs. Dependent Intervening o Theories and hypotheses -- definition and relationship o Universe (defined in book) o Null Hypothesis (defined in book) o Qualitative vs. Quantitative research (features, benefits of each)
