Desai 1 The Killer Angels “Nobody ever died for apple pie”(Shaara 27), Chamberlain’s thought that makes us think about his intention for going to war. By this, he means that there is a reason that men fight each other for and that he has his. He mentions that a man fights for many reasons as he is giving a speech to Maine men (also prisoners who weren’t willing to fight), “ If you look at history you'll see men fight for pay, or women, or some other kind of loot. They fight for land, or because a king makes them, or just because they like killing”(Shaara 29). He later mentions that they are fighting for something beyond that- a belief that all men are equal. This paper will go in more depth of why Chamberlain chose to fight, what are some conflicts that he faces throughout the book, is he sure of his reason and what was the actual reason that he was fighting for at the end? Chamberlain says that he is fighting for abolishing slavery and believes in America being the land of free men. He further tries to express his ideas in a speech that he gives to Maine men but thinks that he failed to do so. Chamberlain first thinks that he shouldn’t express his feelings as he is thinking, “This(the US) was the first place on earth where the man mattered more than the state. True freedom had begun here and it would spread eventually over all the earth. But it had begun here. The fact of slavery upon this incredibly beautiful new clean earth was appalling, but more even than that was the horror of old Europe, the curse of nobility, which the South was transplanting to new soil”(Shaara 27). This shows Chamberlain’s true initial intentions as he is thinking about his purpose by himself. He has the idea that the US was the place where true freedom started and it is the leader of freedom(democracy) in the world. Despite this southerners were trying to bring European ideas back and create their own “aristocracy”(and nobility as he described it). The sole reason that Chamberlain represents here is equality among men. As he
Desai 2 next thinks that Americans don’t fight for land but rather for each other. He also mentions this idea in his speech and when he thinks that Frenchmen fight for France(the land) while Americans fight for people. Chamberlain thinks that it is ideal to not have slavery as a practice
