Unformatted text preview: Kurtosis and Skewness By: Taylor Brown Due April 21, 2011 Skewness and kurtosis measures are often used to describe shape characteristics of a distribution. Many statistics packages print skewness and kurtosis statistics with estimates of their standard errors. The function most often used for the standard errors (e.g., in SPSS) assumes that the data are drawn from a normal distribution, an unlikely situation (Wright, 2011). Skewness Skewness measures the lack of symmetry in the data. A skewness value of zero indicates a symmetrical distribution. A positive value indicates right-skewness whereas a negative value indicates left-skewness (Levine, Krehbiel, & Berenson, 2010). 010009000003ed5501000000018d000000001610000026060f002220574d464301000000 0000010090ca000000000c00000000200000544c0100546c0100010000006c0000000000000000 000000bd0100009e0000000000000000000000843d0000e415000020454d4600000100546c0100 0f000000010000000000000000000000000000000005000020030000c40100001a010000000000 000000000000000000e3e306006e4e0400460000002c00000020000000454d462b014001001c00 0000100000000210c0db01000000600000006000000046000000482d00003c2d0000454d462b22 4004000c000000000000001e4009000c00000000000000244001000c0000000000000030400200 10000000040000000000803f214007000c0000000000000008400005942c0000882c00000210c0 db01000000000000000000000000000000000000000100000089504e470d0a1a0a0000000d4948 4452000001be0000009f0806000000860abcce00000006624b474400ff00ff00ffa0bda7930000000 774494d4507d80b06050a01eb2140d80000200049444154789ceddd777814d5fa07f0efd9d9dd6c 3 KURTOSIS AND SKEWNESS c96e12d2e8a105bc20bd7b11e1aa571105d40b5e15bb828a82a8d87fde5c1b82221da4595010114 43a8234451111451404e925d484045236d932efef8fd95c624ccfee9e2defe779f2982d33e76b98d9 777666ce3980ef3ceac37531c6cad7d9fbc318932416400e80bfcb0ec25884f800c07bb2433016c99 e0140003e931d84b108500740bef727597216c6229205c0696885cf03e072b971180b7be3a1ed6f0 4e06dc959188b48a370692724008be4c6612cacd583f64daf687fcb83f60d9031162075005cc09f0b 1f01e82d331463616c3efebabfcd939a88b108f3092eed7cae62bfef016094988bb17074352eed638 5009cdedf5500bde4c5622c720c069009601a802b001c85b6f3bd02e0208029d29231167e12a0ed6 3eb00dc03e06500e3bcbfaf0370d8fb1ec6989f28d08e3ea38a3d77144043efef02400f007101cec55 8b8ea08a06eb1c7cf01185dec715def7b186315d05773390f80f5e5bc4e00b65473dd8cb1bfda51c1 eb27bd3f8cb10ae86407608c31c602890b1f638cb188c2858f31c65844e1c2c718632ca270e1638c 311651b8f031c6188b285cf818638c45142e7c8c31c6224a753bb0335665a44d61d5332f2eb16da1 c5dec4929d6934e5659f83d6397b85d0661a6061cafbef7f23808e05565b526e4c92cbecb878c89a7 56e27806ff8df9f050a7fe3637e45402d029e2421369010277312ea8ec94e4ee95f60b5c71458a30f 03c800703b8003048c226d383c16460850087812da18be7701c8745aec079d96687b76724abf0bf 175c792102749880d043c4d402dc9915998e36f7ccc2f08680c6024803b3d06c38a338d5bcc58316 c42f30253f4c6ac538eefd3d27abb4bbcbf250965625e6cfc1dbfb4ed7153db4d9f9f90939cf9d2de6 bfbd5cdfde987e5d6f3e7b20579ae15c06f008073e9c0b974a4a56dd4c7d53177333af37bf79b3cf2 8fe4c37b6e505caefda44dbf34510007e4fe1f3056bee28354b30845809980d75588b38551e6b7767...
