Chris Perez 9/21/2010 ACCT 431 Careers in Accounting An accountant’s job is to “provide the data required to assess the present and future economic activities of individuals, businesses, not-for-profit organizations, and governmental bodies. “ A career in accounting entails becoming a skilled professional in one or more of the many fields of accounting, and then using those skills to provide a service to managers, investors, tax authorities, and other decision makers of financial institutions in the most efficient and effective manner possible. In this paper, I will briefly discuss several aspects of having a career in accounting including the different types of accounting careers, the skills involved, the career opportunities, salaries of accountants, and the top firms in accounting. There are five main areas or types of accounting; Auditing, Budget Analysis, Financial Accounting, Managerial Accounting, and Tax. Auditing is the practice of reviewing financial statements and ledgers in order to issue an opinion to the decision makers of the institution. Budget analysis is the negotiating part of accounting.
