1 Syllabus: Foundations of Biology Lab I, BioSci 0050 , Fall, 2009 Important: There will be a 15-point quiz given almost every week. These quizzes will be administered at the beginning of class. This lab class meets only once a week. Due to holidays, there are also a number of weeks during which there are no classes. Therefore, there are only 11 labs this semester. For this reason, no make-ups will be given for missed quizzes . If you miss a quiz, you miss 15 points. If you are given permission to make up the lab during another lab time, then you may take the quiz. Makeup classes are only granted under the conditions stated in the Course Description. Please see the Course Description for the attendance and make-up policies. In order to complete this course, you will need: A 3-ringed notebook to file your printed copies of the lab exercises from CourseWeb. No book is required. Week of August 31: Intro. & Lab Exercise #1: Scientific Method and Koch’s Postulates Welcome to a class on life. First, we will look at the Syllabus and Course Description . Then, the first lab: Seeing science through the eyes of Pasteur, Redi, and Koch and using the Scientific Method and Koch’s Postulates to see how infectious diseases are transferred. First lab activities: The lab documents will be printed for you. Course introduction – Review Syllabus and Course Description Students will complete the first lab exercise. This lab exercise will be printed for you this week only . In the future, you must print your own labs from CourseWeb. Homework due in TWO weeks: There is no lab next week due to the Labor Day holiday. Print and Read the following from the Course Documents link on CourseWeb: Course Description Syllabus Print the following from the Lab Exercises folder under the Course Documents link: Background Information for Lab Exercise #2 Lab Exercise #2: Microscopy and Diversity among Living Organisms. You will be completing a pre- lab assignment. (See below). Print the following from the Learning Strategies folder under the Course Documents link: Using Graphic Organizers to Improve Learning Practice Using a Graphic Organizer: Lab #2 Complete the following before attending Lab #2: Complete the pre-lab assignment for Lab #2. The directions for completing this assignment are on the first page of the pre-lab itself. The pre-lab is a separate document on CourseWeb. Read and Sign the Safety Sheet (the last page of the Course Description ) if you have not yet done so. Complete the Student Information Sheet given to you in class. Read Background Information for Lab Exercise #2: Microscopy and Diversity among Living Organisms. You must read the information in the Background document before coming to class. You will be doing the activities in the lab exercise document in class. You are responsible for the information in both documents for quizzes and the practical exam. If you have any questions about anything that you read in this document, make a note of them and ask your instructor for clarification. Read
