Problem 2: Calculate the stress in the ground below a wide foundation: A concrete bridge pier is 4m tall, has an area of 10 m2, carries a load of 1MN, and has a self weight based on a unit weight of 24kN/m3. The pier is founded on the bed of a tidal river where there is at least 5m of sand with a unit weight of 20 kN/m3. The river bed at low tide is equal to the ground surface, and at high tide there is a 3m water depth. a. What is the stress at the base of the footing (include self weight and vertical load)?
