Geog 120 Notes 1.20.11 I. The Geopolitical Model of the State a. Man-Land Tradition : Human interactions with their environment. b. Environmental Determinism : School of thought, lasted until 1930’s, believed that the physical environment determines culture and everything about people. i. It was NOT Darwin’s idea, rather the work of others who believed his theories. ii. Brought about extremely racist policies. c. Geopolitics: The study of the relationship between space, power, and territory. d. Lebensraum (living space): Used to categorize the need for the state to expand. i. The state grows with the expansion of the population with same culture. ii. States typically grow by absorbing smaller (politically valuable) units/territory around them. iii. Frontier: Peripheral organ of the state that reflects the strength/growth of the state. Typically un[der]developed. iv. It is necessary for the life of the state to expand its territory. e.
