Geog 120 Notes 1.27.11 I. Pangea (Wegener) a. Geological features shape human lives and allow for activities (mining, etc) b. Plate Tectonics : Earth is made up of plates that move (push together/pull apart) over the surface. c. Earth began as one solid island, and over time pieces of land broke apart and moved to form the land we know today. d. Idea was not accepted until long after his death. e. Subduction : Two plates push together, one plate moves under the other. i. When oceanic and continental plates meet, continental plate moves on top of oceanic plate and then breaks off, creating mountains. f. Collision : When two continental plates hit each other. g.
