Geog 120 Notes 2.24.11 Pan-Arab Movement : Begun by Nassar, not wanting to align with the Soviets or the U.S. Pan-Africanism : Move to unite the former colonies and newly independent nation-states of Africa after the failure of the Pan-Arab movement. Arab Socialism : Nationalization of economy, but separation from Marxism. Nassarism : Mix of Nationalism and Socialism. 1 st conflict = 1948 War of Independence b/w Jews/Palestinians; shaped regional/global geopolitical scene. - Seen by Jews as a great instance of nation-building. - Palestinians see it as a great tragedy. Zionism: Movement for the establishment of a Jewish/Israeli state. Began early in 20 th C with settlement in Palestine. Early 1900’s: British wanted to get Turks out of Palestine, and gained control of land there. They promised to guarantee a Jewish state without the violation of Palestinian rights. 1930’s: Impetus for Jewish state when Hitler began his eradication against Jews. This caused a large influx of Jewish people into Palestinian territory, causing anger. 1937: Palestinian uprising
