Unformatted text preview: 1 Letters & Science 5 (UGBA 96): Introduction to Entrepreneurship Professor: Jennifer Walske ([email protected]) TAs: Angela Wang ( [email protected] ) - Attendance Ayan Agarwal ([email protected]) – Speaker Sessions Office & Hours: Monday 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. or by appointment F450, Lester Center, Haas Business School, Faculty Building Class Time & Dates: Mondays, 4:00 – 5:30 p.m., Andersen Auditorium, Haas F295 Course Objective: From a scholarly view, Josef Schumpeter (1934) defines entrepreneurial profit as a result from “unique combinations” of products or services. Howard Stevenson (1985) defines entrepreneurship as “…the pursuit of opportunities beyond the resources under one’s control.” Our goal is for you to create your own, personalized view of entrepreneurship by the end of the course, and further reflect on what entrepreneurship may mean towards your major/minor and post collegiate career. As part of experiential learning, you will find and interview an entrepreneur with a partner. You will also create a novel idea for a product or service and submit it to a panel of judges for review. If you are selected as a semi-finalist, you will have the chance to “pitch” this idea to the class on the last day of class as part of our IdeaFest. We are also going to glean insights from successful entrepreneurs and balance these discussions by reviewing what scholars in the field of entrepreneurship have discovered through research. Workload: This is a one unit, pass/fail course offered jointly by the College of Letters and Sciences and the Haas School of Business. In order to pass this class, you will need to attend at least ten of the thirteen classes, for the entire class. You will need to finish the readings, and pass 50% of the pop quizzes on the readings. You will need to pick a guest speaker and join a forum to jointly create, with other students in your section, questions to ask that entrepreneur in class. You will also create a novel idea for a product or service independently, and write a one to two page summary of this idea, due April 4 at noon into bSpace. You will also select a co-author and interview an entrepreneur as your last assignment. This interview is due into bSpace on April 25 at noon. There is no final in this class. However, attending the last class on May 2, which is the class in which IdeaFest occurs, is mandatory. 2 Assignments Attendance: In order to pass the class, you must attend 10 out of 13 classes for the entire class . Prepare for class by completing the assigned readings. Given that speakers come to Berkeley to interact with students, and that these speakers typically command high speaking fees, we strongly recommend that you attend every class . Attending the last class on May 2 is mandatory in order to pass the class . In order to ensure your complete attention there is a no texting, emailing, facebooking, youtubing (etc.) policy on any device in this class.
