The three potentional air quality hazards in my home, which I know of are, Tobacco, Household chemicals and carpet and rug. Tobacco smoking itself and environmental tobacco smoke also known as second hand smoke causes all sorts of repertory health problems like lung cancer. Due to this kids are at increased risk infections of pneumonia and bronchitis and are more likely to have symptoms like, cough, phlegm and wheeze. Asthmatic children are more at risk. My mom smokes, my older son has asthma so we have solved our tobacco problem by having my mom smoke outdoors with the door closed, because no matter how much you ventilate your home indoor smoking cannot be avoided. My mom and I clean a lot, maybe too much, so household chemicals are definitely a hazard in our home. Among other hazardous chemicals, these products may contain Formaldehyde and Organic chemicals. The health effects from organic chemicals include, eye and repertory tract irritation, headaches, dizziness, visual disorders, memory impairment and maybe even cancer. I think a way to cut down this in home hazard would be to buy more Green product, and to read labels more carefully. The third household hazard in my home would be carpet and rug. Most of our home is carpeted and we have many rugs. No matter how much you clean, carpets and rugs contain dust, mites and germs among other things that we do not see. These cause health risks such as, lung disease. Causing symptoms such as, wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness. One way to prevent this hazard would be to either have a professional come and take care of the problem or to get rid of the rugs and replace the carpet with non-hazard flooring. There are so many hazardous products and gasses in our homes that we do not know of, never even heard of. I think that every home should have an in home safety hazard brochure so that we may at least be safe in our own homes....
