Experimental The analysis of iron was carried out by two calibration methods; (1) External calibration and (2) standard additions method. The preparation of the sample solutions using the external method was prepared by pipetting 10 mL of the 1000 ppm iron standard into a 100 mL volumetric flask and diluting the mark with water. This solution was then used to prepare 100 mL standard solutions of 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 ppm. The preparation of the standard solutions in the additional standard method is tabulated below: Flask (100 mL volumetric flask) Standard (mL) Water (mL) 1 1 4 2 2 3 3 3 2 4 4 1 5 5 0 0 0 5 Table 1 To perform the analysis a few final steps were taken to prepare the AA for operation. The flame was ignited and the gas flow and burner position was optimised. After optimisation the samples and standards were run to determine the absorbance of each of the solutions. Discussion In this experiment, the concentration of iron port and wine samples was determined using atomic mass spectroscopy. This was performed using an external calibration and standard addition method, 6
