Capitalism vs. Socialism   21:27 Weren’t just African Americans who were discriminated against Waves of the immigrants would come to find employment/ join working class Immigrants brought along a new ideology SOCIALISM Karl Marx o Followers ( Marxists ) o Believed in the idea of stages of society o Unlike Enlightenment, Marx took rationally strictly related to Economics Surplus Every higher rationality more surplus (more supply then demand) o Every society was in the process of a dynamic view (change) o Destroy/overpower previous ways and build new hierarchy Bottom line Working Class does the work ( surplus ) Ruling Class live off of the surplus/ working class o Doesn’t do any work No matter which line of history you look at, Ruling Class is always a parasite o Bourgeoisie- Ruling Class o Proletariat- Working Class

Marx felt that Capitalism was the most advanced/efficient stage that humans ever came up with o Capitalism efficient and rational Advanced nature meant it was in the position to eventually take over the world and establish itself as the only world system o The entire world will then become one society Only split in the way of the Working Class and Ruling Class Anything that gets in the way of production or movement of Capital (free market) will be swept aside and taken over by Capitalism As capitalism progressed, eventually even national boundaries will disappear o Unity ; as it becomes a world system, distinctions will disappear, we will realize that we have more in common then we think *** Logic behind Capitalism people see themselves as one solitary group Progression will take us to the next stage of cultural evolution o No inequalities Socialist idea is everybody equally shares Ruling and working class no more GOAL : New working identity Not based on religion, ethnicity, race, etc. Based on the class Example: “The Brotherhood” in The Invisible Man

The Socialist Idea thought Capitalism was being used to keep separate identities between groups of people (working and ruling class) Formation of the American Character 1870(1) World Wide Depression Prices drop dramatically ( deflation ) Production remains constant o Firms aren’t making any money! The idea of the ‘self-regulating’ market was not clearly understood No one knew what to do because with the ‘self-regulating’ idea, this wasn’t supposed to happen In theory of the self-regulating market, the depression should correct itself However, short term, it can be very ugly Clearly, the self-regulating market was not working. We wanted the government to step in and help 1 st response: Protectionism o government felt the need to set up policies to protect against foreign competition by taxing/tariff on foreign products ^^^ Once it got going, every country tried protecting its domestic products from
