Carlson shooting Candy’s Dog When Carlson is trying to convince Candy to shoot his dog, “Candy looked helplessly at him [Slim] for Slim’s opinions were law” (45). Later, before he finally allows Carlson to take his dog out and shoot him, “Candy looked a long time at Slim to try to find some reversal. And slim gave him none” ( 47). What do these two quotes show about Slim’s role in Candy’s decision to let Carlson shoot his dog? Do you think Slim should have stopped it? Why or why not? Much later, after the dog is shot, Candy says: “‘I oughtta of shot that dog myself, George. I shouldn’t oughtta of let no stranger shoot my dog’” (61).
