OMAM Essay: Introduction Paragraph Format NOTES ON STYLE: In this type of analytical writing about literature: Do not use personal pronouns, like “I” or “you.” That means no “mine, your, we”, etc. State only your interpretation of a character, not an opinion about the novel or a summary of the plot. Keep all your verbs in the present tense. Don’t use informal language or slang. Keep your tone more formal than you would when you speak or when you write a personal essay. The introduction to an essay can follow a funnel format, starting quite general and narrowing into your specific thesis: A general idea about life or human nature that is interesting and relates to your ideas. Specific thesis statement that you will argue in your essay. I. Hook Start your essay with an original and engaging sentence that relates to your topic but will pull your reader in. Don’t start with something specific about the book, but don’t start with something too general, either:
