Group Analysis of 90’s Media In small groups, apply the various articles we  discussed in class to the pilot episodes of My So  Called Life and Dawson’s Creek.  Each group will be responsible for interpreting the  pilots through one of the following theorists: -Hine (teenage mystique) -Erikson -Nakkula & Toshalis (Marcia) -Raible & Nieto (multiple identities) -Bronson & Merryman (rebellion) -Philo (major teen themes)

Group Analysis of 90’s Media Hine  theorizes that adolescent behavior is determined in part by how adult  society views teenagers and the often negative expectations society has for  them Erikson:  theory of development; emphasizes psychosocial aspects  (interaction between teens and society); individuals need to complete tasks  for each stage, from childhood on, in order to successfully move on into  adulthood and adult stages; includes specific tasks for adolescence  Marcia’s theory of statuses within adolescent  development, an extension of Erikson, that describe four possible ways of  being an adolescent, some of which are more positive than others
