Begins with a “truth” and seeks to prove it. Two VERY Different Approaches to Explaining Important Contributors to the Theory of Evolution Carolus Linnaeus (1707-1778) Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913) Jean-Baptiste Larmarck (1744-1829) Charles Darwin (1803-1873) Carolus Linnaeus (1707-1778) Proposed a comprehensive taxonomy of plants & animals Binomial system based on similarities and differences in physical characteristics (reproductive) saw it as part of God’s orderly plan (“Great Chain of Being”)ß Observed that fossils found in 1700s show different species Hypothesized that catastrophes had destroyed ancient species Jean-Baptiste Larmarck (1744-1829) proposed the Theory of Transmutation (1809) which relies on Inheritance of Acquired Characteristics Organisms constantly “improve” by successive generation Humans are at the top of this progression (passed through all the previous stages in prehistory) The means of change is IAC which follows the Law of Use and Disuse Organisms adapt to their environments and… Pass these adaptations on to their offspring.
