HIST 4205 10-03-06 Huey Long “Share Our Wealth” Father Charles Coughlin National Union for Social Justice Huey Long One of the most Vocal/Dangerous critics of New Deal Louisiana Tulane Law School Becomes Gov. of LA 1928 Totally controls state of LA All state positions had to support Long Legislation Free textbooks for schools Fair amount of progressive legislation done Paving of roads Stake out here to get votes Survived an impeachment attempt 1930-31 – proposal to help cotton farmers “Cotton Holiday” Cotton farmers don’t plant any cotton Idea was to drop surpluses and drive up price of cotton Didn’t consider how farmers would feed families but… He’s thinking about the farmers Gets national name recognition b/c of this 1930 Announced he was going to run for US Senate But doesn’t want to vacate governor’s seat just yet Waits until 1932 until he vacates the governor seat He serves as governor and senator at same time for 4 months Takes his senate seat in 1932 1932 election Announced early on that he was supporting FDR
