Be familiar with such concepts as “negative analogy,” “fixed epithet,” and “epic hyperbole.” 2. What defines a bylina of the “Mythological” Cycle? What defines a bylina of the “Kievan” Cycle? Give an example of each type which you have read. a. Mythological – oldest, pagan like, hard to date Ex:  b. Kievan – bogatyrs of Vladimir’s court Ex. Ilya Muromets – most respected b/c experience, mentor for younger bogatyrs,  canonized in 1643, real person --- Illya Muromets and Kalin Tsar 3. By what evidence is it obvious that Volkh Vseslavevich is a sorcerer, in the bylina in which he appears? 4. What is the bogatyr’s sworn duty (e.g., what does he promise to defend)? 5. How does the bylina differ from the Russian “Wondertale” (fairytale)? Refer to differences between the heroes and the plot, stylistic differences, and structural elements. 6. Who is the prince who sends bogatyrs on great missions in the bylini? Is he an actual historical figure? Explain. 7. Discuss the relationship between the bylina and actual history, making reference to their use of historical personalities and events. 8. IMPORTANT: You must read “Baldak Borisievich” (Afanas’ev, pp. ) and be prepared to give examples that show how it reflects the bylina tradition, and also how it is NOT a bylina. Literary Fairy Tales
