Denise Toledo Weekly Assignment Five points was a residential neighborhood that housed artisans in a time where the economy was changing due to commercialization and the development of transportation methods. The population of Five Points swelled due to the migration of people however, Five Points had many issues such as its instable appearance due to frequent moving of residents and the very ground of the neighborhood. It was damp and created floods, shifting homes, and disease. Because of its poor conditions, Five Points was associated with blacks and immigrants and was in constant poverty and eventually became a center of prostitution. It had developed into a slum. Drunkenness and indecency seemed to be the best description of the scene at Five Points. Fights erupted over politics, abolition, race and basically any other excuse. The people of Five points came from around the world although the population was made up of mostly Irishmen followed by Americans, Germans, Jews and others. Because of the largely
