Program that focuses narrowly on teen pregnancy are deficient because they believe they can isolate the so-called deviant behavior and dismiss the cultural factors that contribute to teen pregnancy. Males’ 4 arguments that explain why such programs rarely work are: 1 st point: most teen pregnancies are caused by adult men, men over 20 . In fact, 71% of teen pregnancies are caused by adult men. Men over 25 are twice more likely to father teen pregnancy of a high school girl than that of a high-school aged boy. In middle school pregnancies, men over the age of 20 are 5 times more likely to father a child than a boy of similar age. Also noted is that the younger the girl, the larger the age difference between her and the father. Possible reason is that the sexualization of young girls as seen in “Killing Us Softly 4.” So we are focusing on wrong group of men. 2 nd point: majority of girls that gets pregnant have history of rape, sexual or physical abuse. 5% of teenage births are the direct product of such rapes.
