Purpose: The first purpose of the lab was to synthesize a cobalt complex. The second purpose of this experiment was to purify the cobalt complex and measure its wavelength of maximum absorbance using the Ocean Optic Spectrometer. The wavelength of absorbance of four other cobalt complexes were to be determined in a similar manner. Based on the color of the complexes, their identities were to be determined using Crystal Field Theory. Procedure Part A—Synthesis of Cobalt Complex A A 5.083g sample of cobalt was obtained and dissolved in 7.0 mL of distilled water. The cobalt was a pink color. When dissolved in water, the solution appeared dark red. 20.0 mL of acetone was obtained in a 50 mL beaker and left in an ice bath to cool. The ice bath was set aside for later use. A 16.0g sample of ammonium chloride was then obtained and mixed with 16.0 mL of ammonia in order to create an ammonium chloride suspension. The solution was white with chunks of ammonium. When the cobalt was added the suspension became dark red. A 4.0 mL solution of 30% hydrogen peroxide was then obtained and added to the casserole dish. The addition of hydrogen peroxide gave off a yellowish brown gas. A grey precipitate formed and the solution turned dark black. The dish was then prepared to be heated. An 800 mL beaker was obtained
