OBJECTIVE The objective of this lab is to observe the affect of heavy pulley on an operation of an Atwood machine. 2. THEORETICAL BACKGROUND Using the given information about the length, diameter and mass of each cylinder, the inertia can be calculated by rearranging: I tot = 2I 1 + 2I 2 + I 3 ====> I tot = 2(.5)(M 1 )(R 1 ) 2 + 2(.5)(M 2 )(R 2 ) 2 + (.5)(M 3 )(R 3 ) 2 With this equation, and the mentioned equations in the lab book, calculate tension of both pulleys. With tension known, acceleration can then be calculated and all substituted to solve for t theoretical , which is expressed as: t theoretical = √(2S/a) 3. EQUIPMENT Heavy Pulley Apparatus 600g hanger weights (x2) Standard slotted weight set Right angle clamp (x2)
