Tom Pampalone 10/19/10 Phy 105A Section 011 Lab 103 Purpose: The primary purpose of this lab is to verify that the condition for static equilibrium is that the vector sum of forces is zero. Background: As stated by Newton's Laws of motion, a particle that experiences zero net force will either remain at rest or moving with a constant speed in a straight line depending on the initial condition. Any vector can be composed into x and y components. The vector sum can be calculated by adding the x and y components of the vectors. The magnitude of the resultant by R = (Rx 2 + Ry 2 ) 1/2 and the direction of the resultant vector can be calculated by ∂ = tan -1 (Ry/Rx). Equipment: Force Table( with a centering pin attached in the center) with 3 pulleys 50g weight hanger (x3) Central ring with 3 attached knotted strings Standard set of weight Procedure: 1. Set the tensions at the three strings be T a , T b , T c and the corresponding direction to be ∂a, ∂ b , ∂ c . 2.
