They assume they understand the question on first reading They spend more time analysing the question. They don’t make any assumptions and read the question a number of times to make sure they are interpreting it correctly. 2 Exploring the topic They spend little time brainstorming or thinking about the topic and key issues They spend more time brainstorming. They think about various ways in which they can approach the topic. 3 Planning the essay They do not spend time planning. They do not make an outline of the structure of the essay. They develop plans and ideas as they write. They spend much time planning the essay after selecting what they think is the best approach to answering the question. They always make an outline of the structure
