Language and Learning Advisor Services Writing Strategies for University Assignments ( adapted from Becoming a Writer at University 1. Start at the beginning: Read the course outline Read the assessment criteria for each assignment 2. Spend time reading the assignment question: Highlight the content words (subject area or topic words) Highlight the directive words (e.g. discuss, analyse, compare/contrast) Decide how many parts there are to the task Identify the limits or scope of the question (time, place, groups, issues) 3. Brainstorm/think about the question: Ask yourself questions about the assignment – make sure you understand the different issues? Ask yourself what you know and what you need to find out Read generally about the topic from the textbook 4. Research and Reading: Read widely – databases (journal articles, textbooks, newspapers, Internet) Take careful notes (use headings, mark references): i. Use highlighters, Post-it notes, Card systems
