- Police operations in Japan are divide into two sets: Koban and Chuzaisho. - Chuzaisho o Countryside operations o Often a single officer who lives in an attached apartment with his family - Koban o City-base and much more prevalent (4/5 of Japan in urban) o Very small offices located all over the city o Unlike the US where patrol officer rule, Koban prefer many small offices which allow for quick response time. This is a product of Japan’s smaller amount of streets Some patrol cars exists to transfer criminals but these have close relations with the Koban - Koban development hindered by two factors: Land prices and personel o Prices in Tokyo are huge o Shifts of three – if everyone is busy or sick, Koban can be left unattended Work 56 hours, 8 for rest each cycle. 2 cycles per week.
