DOES PUNISHMENT DETER CRIME? 2 Does Punishment deter crime? Statistics reveal that some criminals end up returning to criminal behavior, after some time. This makes people question, whether punishment is a deter to crime. In an attempt to review the outcome of punishment and crime in American society, the description of deviant behavior is clearer, retribution, deterrence, rehabilitation, and the protection of the people in the American society needs to be recognized and identified with. Criminal deviance can be defined as an immoral violation of social norms, which society defines as wrong and or improper; or unacceptable by legal standards. Social control is determined by laws governed to protect society, and to regulate how society functions as a whole. .. During the biblical times, criminals that were found guilty of crimes were punished in public, hoping this would deter other criminals from committing the same types of crimes. If the books of religion are to be believed, it is said that thieves were placed on a cross in public areas for display. While the public displays were meant to deter thievery in those times, it is apparent this deterrent did not work. Look at society today if it would have worked then, we would not have people stealing today. The punishment fitting the crime is how society believes a criminal should have to be punished, but according to the Axia (2008), study coarse book states that in an effort to establish the punishment to fit the crime, justice may not be completely intact or that a punishment could possibly be more severe than the crime committed.
