Hellenism Comes from Ellinismos, of Greek lineage Used to describe set of values and traits to do w/ Greek ideals -reason & pursuit of knowledge (origins of philosophy) -The arts, moderation -civic responsibility -Bodily development (exercise) Artistic representation Sculpture -idealism in rep. of human body -perfection in form…not necessarily “real” image -Vibrant, full of life, knowledge of anatomy -disproportionate body parts (head, hands, etc.) Architecture -symmetry & balance -balance in number, proportions, mathematical structure -Golden Ratio – 1:1.618 (height to width) Philosophy Socrates-philosophy should consider moral & ethical problems “How well do you live your life?” -left no writings -asked youth to challenge authority, gods, etc. -based on di alogue; answers elicited more questions Plato -Student of Socrates -founded “The Academy” -wrote dialogues of Socrates where he put his philosophies in the character of Socrates
