DNA and Heredity: Basic Biological Structures of Baby Making Chromosomes – carriers of genetic material; 23 pairs Autosomes – First 22 pairs ; Same size Sex chromosome – 23 rd pair is the determinant of baby’s sex 1 chromosome = 1 molecule of DNA Adenine – Thymine ; Guanine – Cytosine Gene – group of nucleotide bases that provides biological instructions ; depends on order o Alleles – means that it comes in different forms II. Single Gene Inheritance Incomplete dominance – phenotype between two options; known as carrying a trait. Phenotype – genetics + environment = physical, behavioral, and psychological features; III. Genetic Disorders Occur in 1 of 2 ways: o Inherited or Extra/missing chromosomes on eggs or sperm Inherited Disorders: o Sickle-cell anemia – recessive allele o Huntington’s Disease – dominant allele - In adulthood, causes degeneration of the nervous system
