HW1 Solutions 1. Explain the purpose of MACAW's DS frame? Describe a mechanism to replace it. Explain the trade-offs between the two approaches. The DS packet in MACAW primarily helps exposed nodes to defer till the next contention slot. MACAW uses an RTS/CTS mechanism to reserve the channel. However nodes which are exposed to the receiver are unaware whether the RTS/CTS exchange was successful and Data is being transmitted. The DS packet sent by the source before actual data is transmitted helps to indicate to the exposed node that the RTS/CTS exchange was successful and to defer till the DATA + ACK slot has passed. Alternate mechanism to replace DS is to use physical carrier sensing. Tradeoffs: Physical carrier sensing requires extra hardware and is more complex for wireless. DS packets are an extra overhead can potentially collide. Also certain node configurations require the use of RRTS along with DS.
