Economic Citizenship Program 2 ECONOMIC CITIZENSHIP PROGRAM Some countries offer citizenship to persons who make investment, contribution or donation to those particular countries. The following is an outline of the economic citizenship programs offered to potential emigrants by three of the more popular countries: Cape Verde, Belize and St. Christopher and Nevis (St. Kitts & Nevis). CAPE VERDE Introduction The Cape Verde Islands which constitute the Republic of Cape Verde are located in the mid- Atlantic Ocean some 385 miles (620 kilometres) off the west coast of Africa. The total population is estimated at 375,000. Although the official language is Portuguese, many Cape Verdeans also speak English or French. Economic Citizenship Program This program is authorised by an amendment to the Cape Verde Constitution and its immigration and nationality laws authorising the grant of Cape Verdean Citizenship to persons who make a valuable contribution to Cape Verde. Under the Economic Citizenship Program, a qualified applicant who makes a charitable contribution of US$35,000 to the Cape Verde Development Foundation may immediately submit an application for Cape Verdean nationality and passport. The funds raised will be used to fund the building of schools, hospitals, libraries and for other good public purposes. The contribution of US$35,000 will qualify the applicant, spouse and children under the age of 18 to apply for Cape Verdean nationality and passports. Should the applicant be unmarried at the time of the application, his or her subsequent spouse and subsequent children will also qualify for Cape Verdean nationality and passports without any additional contributions being required. Should the applicant subsequently divorce and remarry, his or her new spouse will likewise qualify without having to make a new contribution. There is no requirement to land or reside in Cape Verde in order to obtain or to maintain Cape Verdean Citizenship. Once an application is approved, the applicant will receive his or her Cape Verdean passport via international courier at the mailing address indicated on the application form. Cape Verde permits dual citizenship. Any person, regardless of race, sex, religion, physical disability or place of national origin may apply for Cape Verdean Citizenship under this program. The applicant must be of good moral character and be free from any communicable diseases. Visa status of Cape Verdean passport holders Following is a list of some of the countries Cape Verdean nationals can enter with the entry requirements specified. Entry requirements of the various countries may change from time to time. Therefore, it is advisable travellers should check with the embassy or consulate of the country they
