Unformatted text preview: The Plasma Membrane The Plasma Membrane History- When life was evolving and macromolecules were moiling and seething in a primeval slime, it was necessary to isolate these molecules from the environment. Membranes evolved to separate the macromolecules of life from the early oceans surrounding them. A cell was formed where the membrane was fundamentally key to separating a living from a non-living system. DeFnition- The membrane deFnes the boundary of the cell and allows cell functions to be separate from the environment. BUT the membrane is not an absolute barrier. It is a selective barrier . It must let some molecules pass through it while blocking others. Key question How does the membrane select molecules? How is it constructed in order for this selectivity to happen? The Fluid Mosaic Theory The plasma membrane is an assemblage of lipids and proteins held together by weak molecular bonds. This membrane is uid whereby the protein and lipid elements move freely with respect to each other and the membrane. The Lipid Bilayer The lipid part of the membrane is the main constituent with regard to number. Most of the membrane is lipids . 1 Protein / 50 Lipids- The lipid component is the primary structural part of the membrane whereas the proteins have specialized functions . Electron micrograph of a lipid bilayer. Three Types of Lipids Compose the Plasma Membrane 1. Phospholipids (most abundant) - The deFning characteristic of phospholipids with regard to membrane construction is a physical property....
