The Crisis of the Late Middle Ages I. Periodization; Late Middle Ages: roughly 1300-1450 a. When does periods begin and end; no clear answer b. The time of crises and sweeping changes… culture, politics, religion, art, philosophy, etc. II. Breakdown of the Medieval Synthesis; contrasts to decline of Roman Empire a. A culture fixated on death b. A major difference: when the Roman Empire declined, its former territories emerged weak and fragmented. When Western Europe emerged, they emerged stronger than ever. c. The crisis of the late middle ages was a series of overlapping crises. Each one in their own way created a challenged to medieval order. d. Many people started doubting their assumptions. How did people define their identity? III. Decline of Church Authority a. King Philip IV of France (1285-1314) vs. Pope Boniface VIII i. Conflict – turned out differently than others that proceeded it… ii. King tried to bring Church officials to trials in court… take away privileges that French church officials had… iii. The Pope tried to stop Philip iv. King Philip got together a group of green knights, and got them to go to Rome and arrest the Pope… v. Boniface barely escaped but because he was so shocked of this episode he died…
