INITIAL QUESTIONS: SPRING 2009 General Issues -- Do you agree? 1. There are universal moral imperatives. 2. Life is sacred and should be protected. 3. Suffering, once detected, should be alleviated. 4. Sometimes, important moral principles conflict. 5. Some lives are worth more than others. 6. Family members have a stronger responsibility to family than to others. 7. Citizens have a higher duty to their own country than to other countries. Protecting Public Health 1. Laws should mandate that persons get inoculated to protect public health. 2. Laws should mandate that persons protect themselves against high probability of disabling events that will end up costing the tax payers money – seat belts, bike helmets, preventative measures for cancer. 3. Assume we have been able to isolate a hereditary trait that leads to a high cost disease. Laws should mandate that persons with this trait not have children. Abortion
