Dr. Ruder 1 Class Activity 8 Fischer Projections Fischer projections are just a different way of viewing stereoisomers. Model 1: Fischer Projections Fischer projections are just another way of representing chiral organic compounds. Fischer projections are drawn with straight horizontal and vertical lines. C CH 3 CH 2 CH 3 H Br CH 3 CH 2 CH 3 Br H wedge dash Fischer Questions: 1. In the wedge dash structure above, circle the carbon parent chain. In the Fischer projection is the carbon chain drawn vertical or horizontal? vertical 2. Compare the Fischer projection to the wedge dash structure. (a). What direction is implied for vertical lines in the Fischer projection? Down or below the plane . (b). What direction is implied for horizontal lines in the Fischer projection? Up or above the plane. 3. Make a model of the wedge dash compound. Compare it to the Fischer projection shown to see that the two structures are just a different way to represent the same compound. 4. Converting wedge-dash structures to Fischer Projections requires reorientation of the carbon framework so that the carbon chain is pointing down. (a). Make a model of the following compound in the staggered conformation. Rotate the C1-C2 bond 180° so that the carbon framework is in the eclipsed (U-shape) conformation. Redraw the rotated structure in wedge-dash form. Cl H Cl H 1 2 (b). Turn the model (keeping in the eclipsed conformation) so that the carbon chain is vertical, with C1 and C4 pointing down. Use wedge and dash lines only to draw this form below. (c). Convert the structure drawn to a Fischer Projection, using straight lines only.
