1. Describe carbohydrates (CHO) in general; comment on the appropriateness of the name. Carbohydrates are the most abundant biomolecules on earth. Carbohydrates are polyhydroxy aldehydes or ketones, or substances yielding such compounds on hydrolysis. Many carbohydrates have the empirical formula (CH 2 0) n . 2. Write the completer structural formulas (Fisher linear forms) for gluclose, mannose, galactose, and fructose; discuss and distinguish the D- and L- forms; write structures of fours sugar’s (hemiacetal and hemiketal) froms (Haworth) which from in aqueous solution. *** D and L enantiomers refer to the configurational stereochemistry of the molecule. L isomers have the hydroxy group attached to the left side of the asymmetric carbon furthest from the carbonyl, while D isomers have the hydroxy group on the right side. Naturally occurring sugars are D isomers. Gluclose
