Metabolism: These are your cells. These are your cells on drugs. Metabolism represents the net synthesis (anabolism) and degradation (catabolism) of chemicals in an  organism.  Metabolism is the process that drives cellular processes.  Cellular requirements are generated  through metabolism.  When a cellular substance is needed, signals are sent throughout the cell to  initiate the synthesis of that particular substance.  This process is called anabolism.  On the other  hand, when substances accumulate in the cell, signals are generated for degradation of the substance.  This process is called catabolism.   Through the process of metabolism, energy is used and produced/given off during this process.  As  changes/modifications are made to the initial substance, intermediate substances are also generated  during metabolism.  These substances are called metabolites.  As metabolism takes place and  modifications are made to the initial substance, small molecules are removed and given off.  These are  called by-products.                 By-products a b c d A B C D E     Initial Reactant                  End Product         Metabolites (Ephardt, 2003) 1
