Tanisha Billups  April 18, 2008 Research Day OPENING PRESENTATION: Dr. Velma McBride Murry presented her research on issues that affect rural African American families’ lives. Specifically, she focuses on way external stressors such as racism and how they affect African American families and how each member deals with the stress. Dr. McBride Murry discussed how we are in paradox state for African American families right now because of social factors, poverty, and racial discrimination. She mentioned that there has been an increase in students receiving a college education yet she explained that now is the worst time for crime, high school drop out rate, rate of incarcerated males, high unemployment, and single parent households. Broader topics presented by Dr McBride Murry were poverty and economic despair, unequal distribution of resources, and the strain of not having an education. She also addressed health issues, life style, second hand stress, affects of African American Women and research in general.
