Unformatted text preview: Recitation February 22 1 REACTION RATES: A CLOCK REACTION You will study the kinetics of the reaction of iodide (I- ) with peroxydisulfate (or persulfate ) (S 2 O 8 2- ). 2 I- + S 2 O 8 2- → 2 SO 4 2- + I 2 iodide peroxydisulfate sulfate iodine Reactant 1 Reactant 2 2 e lost 2 e gained The extent of reaction will be monitored using thiosulfate (S 2 O 3 2- ). I 2 + 2 S 2 O 3 2- → S 4 O 6 2- + 2 I- iodine thiosulfate tetrathionate iodide 2 e gained 2 e lost Recitation February 22 2 2 I- + S 2 O 8 2- → 2 SO 4 2- + I 2 Reactant 1 persulfate Reactant 2 forms a complex with starch that is blue-black I 2 + 2 S 2 O 3 2- → S 4 O 6 2- + 2 I- iodine thiosulfate destroys the iodine and the solution becomes clear • Reactant 1 and 2 react to form iodine and the solution becomes blue-black. • Thiosulfate is added and the solution becomes clear. • With time, more I 2 is formed and the blue-black reappears....
