Tanisha Billups Experiment 3 February 13, 2008 Spectrophotometric Analysis of Aspirin Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to use visible electromagnetic radiation to determine the percent composition of commercial grade aspirin. Procedure A: Operating instructions for the Spectronic 20 1. Turn on instrument by rotating the left hand knob clockwise 2. Allow 10-15 minutes to warm up 3. Adjust the knob so the needle reads 0 on percent transmittance scale 4. While the instrument is warming up, rinse 2 test tubes (cuvettes) with distilled water 3 times 5. Fill each cuvette 2/3 full of distilled water and put on in a sample holder 6. Adjust the right hand knob so the needle reads 50% 7. Replace the cuvette with the other 8. If the %T of the 2 nd cuvette is not within 1% of the 1 st tube repeat until the two fall within 1% of each other 9. Do not handle the lower part of the cuvette 10. Wipe the outside of the cuvette with lab tissue 11. Adjust the wavelength to the desired setting by using the knob on top
