Cation Qualitative Analysis Procedures Record all changes (formation and color of precipitates, evolution of gas, etc.) in your laboratory  notebook. A. Separation and Confirmation of Ag + 1. Add 2-3 drops of 6 M HCl to 10 drops of the sample.  Centrifuge the sample, decant and save  the liquid for further tests. 2. Wash the precipitate with 5 drops of deionized water, then add 6 M NH 3  drop wise and stir to  dissolve.  Then add 6 M HNO drop wise until a change occurs. B. Separation and Confirmation of Fe +3  and Cr +3 . 1. To the decanted liquid from part A1, add 2-3 drops of 5 M NH4Cl, then add 6 M NH drop wise  with stirring until a change occurs.  Centrifuge the sample, decant and save the liquid for further  tests. 2. Wash the precipitate with deionized water, then add 10 drops of 3 M NaOH and 5 drops of 3%  H 2 O with stirring.  Centrifuge the sample, decant and save the liquid for step B4.
