Channels and Association ± Each mobile host needs to associate with an AP before it can send or receive data. ± When a network administrator installs an AP, he/she assigns a one- or two-word Service Set Identifier (SSID) to the AP. ± He/she must also assign a channel number to the AP. ² 802.11b/g operates within 2.4 2.485 GHz. ² 11 partially overlapping channels are defined. ² Two channels are non-overlapping iff they are separated by four or more channels.

Discovering Available Network ± Passive Scanning ² Each AP broadcasts periodically a Beacon frame , which includes: AP s MAC address, Network name (aka Service Set Identifier, SSID), etc. ± Active Scanning ² Station sends a Probe Request frame ² AP responses with a Probe Response frame, which includes AP s MAC address, SSID, etc.
