Steven Delaney CMN3 A08 3-10-2011 Friends Analysis Communication competence: In this episode we see, as everyone greets Phoebe, they do so by telling her how great she looks. This is a commonplace when someone is dressed up in something fancy and fitting. They all know what they are supposed to do in such a situation, and thus do so, not flouting any maxims. However, Phoebe does by saying “I know” to some of them, rather than being humble and accepting the praise with thanks. In order to get our point across we often have to change the style of verbal communication and nonverbal communication together. When Phoebe is talking to Rachel about a dress and says that it isn't for that night, Ross gets upset. To calm him down, Rachel softens her tone, crouches down a little, waves him off and says “I love you I love you” in order to make him ease his mind. This is a common submissive kind of style of communication that we use in situations we see fit. She shows communication competence in this situation. Nonverbal communication: When Joey “steals” the chair from Chandler, Chandler uses many gestures in an attempt to get his point across. Among these he displays his aggression by leaning in towards Joey and closing the proximity. He waves his arms around trying to convince the other party that he is correct in the matter, or to just
