PILOT TESTING OF A DIABETES INFORMATION AND MANAGEMENT KIOSK IN A RURAL COMMUNITY PHARMACY by MARY BARNETT (Under the Direction of Rebecca M. Mullis) ABSTRACT Educating the 17 million people with diabetes in the United States about self-care for their disease management remains a challenge to the healthcare system. A web-enabled, interactive touch screen health information and management kiosk placed in a rural community pharmacy has the potential to address this issue. The kiosk may aid in patient monitoring and provide education materials needed to control Type 2 diabetes. Electronic databases record the activity of kiosk users and store data downloaded from patients’ glucometer. The databases allow for remote monitoring of patients’ blood glucose and kiosk maintenance. Ten participants used the kiosk through the four-month pilot trial and increased their understanding of diabetes care as well as general diabetes knowledge. Participants demonstrated a decrease in weight but not average blood glucose (A1c) or blood pressure. The data from this pilot study suggests the kiosk can be an effective tool for providing diabetes patients with health information and for monitoring blood glucose. iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This project gave me a unique and wonderful graduate experience that many students do not get to experience. I am truly honored by the confidence that my committee placed in me to undertake such a project. There were days that I felt the project and graduate school had broken me, but I kept on fighting in order to make this project a success. It was during the long weekly drives to Clayton that I would renew myself by thinking of all of the possibilities to deliver patient information on the kiosk, particularly about nutrition. One day I will complete them. I want to thank my committee, Dr. Mullis, Dr. Galen and Dr. Cook for giving me this project and all of the encouragement it took to complete it. Dr. Cook, I particularly thank you for “volunteering” your wife’s pharmacy and for the emotional guidance you provided by still having a student perspective of how research goes. Dr. Fleming thanks for helping me along the writing process. Many thanks to everyone in the Department of Foods and Nutrition for all of the encouragement and help with the project.
