LAB 126 Mehar Ghei LABORATORY EXPERIMENT REPORT Name: Mehar Ghei Group Members: Nicole Tran, Yvunne Chen, Nakib Junayed Experiment Date: Tuesday, November 2 nd , 2010 Course Name: PHYS 111A Section: H01 Instructor: Beidi He LABORATORY #126 Conservation of Momentum and Impulse Theorem 1. OBJECTIVE While carrying out the experiment, measure the velocities of the glider before and after collision, then compare it to the change in momentum of the glider. Verify that momentum is conserved. 2. THEORETICAL BACKGROUND Momentum is a product of mass and velocity, = p mv Newton’s Law for linear momentum: The momentum of the system only changes if there are external forces acting on the system. The collision is elastic if the Kinetic Energy of the system does not change. The collision is inelastic when two elements stick and move with the same velocity after collision. 3. EQUIPMENT The equipment used for both parts of this lab: Gliders Mass Photo gates Air Track Page 1 of 4
