Management Attainment of organizational goals in an effective and efficient manner through planning, organizing, leading  and controlling organizational resources Executive function of the organization Building and coordinating entire system Create systems and conditions that enable others to perform those tasks Create the right systems and environment, ensure that the department or organization will  survive and thrive Recognize the key role of people Four Management Functions (POLC): o Planning Identifying goals and resources or future organizational performance. Involves: selecting future goals Deciding on the ways those goals will be attained o Organizing Assigning tasks, delegating authority and allocating resources. o Leadership  The use of influence to motivate employees to achieve goals. involves:  Creating an organizational culture of shared values Communication goals to employees Instilling in employees a desire to achieve high levels of goal accomplishment Working with both individuals and groups (departments) to maximize performance o Controlling Monitoring activities and taking corrective action when needed. involves: Establishing performance goals Monitoring or measuring performance and comparing to progress to the stated goals Taking corrective actions when performance to too low (to bring performance back in line) Taking preventing actions when performance is satisfactory (to prevent regression) Effectiveness The degree to which the organizations achieves goals Efficiency Use of minimal resources to produce desired output Management Skills: o Conceptual Skills Cognitive ability to see the organization as a whole system o Human Skills

The ability to work with and through other people o Technical Skills Understanding and proficiency in the performance of specific tasks Technical Skills are most important at the lower level. Conceptual Skills are more important at the higher level.
