Thomas Krenning Blackworms treated with Glucose or Splenda solution exhibit a significant increase in Pulsation Rate, while Caffeine has a negligible effect Abstract The effect of chemicals on the cardiovascular system is simple to study in Lumbriculus variegatus or blackworms . Lumbriculus variegatus were treated with .1 mM Caffeine solution, 10% glucose solution, and 10% Splenda solution for 30 seconds and the pulsations per minute were recorded immediately after. Blackworms treated with glucose or Splenda solution exhibited a significant increase in pulsation rate, while caffeine had a negligible effect. The glucose and Splenda solution increased the pulsation rate of the blackworms by virtually the same value. This is because the glucose and Splenda increased the blood glucose of the blackworm, influencing its rate of pulsation. Other studies suggest caffeine increased the rate of pulsation in blackworms, the results for this experiment did not reflect that possibly due to the low number of trials for each chemical. Introduction The cardiovascular system is an important component for transport of nutrients throughout the body and homeostasis of many organisms. A major component of the cardiovascular system is the heart. Heart rate is the frequency with which the heart contracts, pumping blood throughout the human body. The cardiovascular system of an organism is regulated by hormones and neurotransmitters, that work together to keep the organism in homeostasis. The release of these hormones and neurotransmitters and their effect on the cardiovascular system can be influenced by many stimuli. Usually the

release of the hormones and neurotransmitters is regulated to keep the heart rate steady. However, there are some stimuli that induce a change in heart rate. (Siribaddana P. 2002) Some examples of these stimuli, for humans, are exercise, fever, strong emotions, high blood glucose levels, and digestion. Digestion affects heart rate because blood needs to be pumped to the stomach and intestines for absorption. This decreases the blood pressure, which stimulates the increase in heart rate observed during digestion. (Siribaddana P. 2002) Drugs and other chemicals can also have an effect on the heart rate of an organism. When the blood glucose of a human is high the heart rate also increases. (Kennedy 2000) Some drugs, like stimulants have been shown to increase heart rate and blood glucose. (National Institute on Drug Abuse 2005) Stimulants are a class of drug that is known to affect the central nervous system, having a variety of general effects on the human body including, increased awareness and energy. (National Institute on Drug Abuse 2005) Caffeine (C 8 H 10 N 4 O 2 ), a known stimulant, has been used by humans since the Stone Age. (Escohotado 1999) Today it is consumed commonly in drinks such as coffee, tea, and soft drinks. Caffeine has a known effect on the central nervous system in humans, which helps classify it as a stimulant. (Nehlig 1992) One of the pathways that caffeine
