The ion that has a higher Rf value and travels farther would “push” the lower Rf value ion and skew the results. 8) Pencil is not a liquid and cannot be drawn into the paper by capillary action. Pen however, can be affected by capillary action. This would mess with the results of the chromatography by moving up the paper, losing the origin line and messing with the distance traveled by the ions and solvent. 9) Covering the beakers with a watch glass keeps solvent from evaporating and keeps contaminants out of the beaker....
